Electric motors used in hybrid and electric vehicles require very little regular maintenance. With very few moving parts, electric motors are highly reliable and durable. However, these reliable motors are fitted to advanced transmissions in hybrid vehicles and reduction gearing in electric vehicles. Hybrid Transmissions
Hybrid vehicle transmissions are designed with similar components as petrol or diesel vehicle transmissions – with the added precautions of working around high-voltage electrical components. As with all automatic transmissions, they require regular servicing as heat degrades the transmission fluid’s ability to separate precision metal parts with a film of lubricant.

Electric Drive Units
Electric drive units combine electric motors with reduction gearing. This allows a relatively small and light electric motor to develop the high wheel torque needed to accelerate from a standstill. An EV gearbox does not change gears as frequently (or at all) so there is less stress on the fluid and internal parts.
This does not mean that drive units do not require servicing. All lubricants degrade with heat, pressure and time.
